Breast cancer treatment could be revised

A study reported in the April issue of the British journal Lancet Oncology has added to the growing body of work indicating that the current standard approach for post-surgical radiation treatment of breast cancer-a dose of 2.0 grays of radiation each day for 25 days, usually over five weeks-is no more effective than a regime of larger individual doses administered on fewer occasions, and less frequently, with a lower total dose. In practical terms, a regime with fewer doses could be more readily available to patients, especially those who live far from radiation treatment centers and might not be able to get treatment every day.
