Contract signed for second Leningrad station

The St.Petersburg Research and Development Institute (Atomen-ergoproekt) on March 14 signed a contract to supply the first two units for a second nuclear power station at Rosenergo-atom's Leningrad site-Leningrad Nuclear Power Plant-2. As the general contractor, the company will be responsible for the construction and commissioning of the reactors. The contract is valued at 136 billion Russian rubles (about $4.2 billion). According to the company, the two 1172-MWe pressurized water reactors will be upgraded versions of the Tianwan units built by Russia in China, with enhanced safety parameters and additional passive safety systems. Design work for the plant began in 2006, and the project was officially launched on August 30, 2007, while the construction contract was being negotiated. The first unit is to be in operation in 2013.
