Smith Flow Control has introduced its Flexi-Drive valve operating system, a cable-driven remote operator for valves in inaccessible or hazardous locations. It consists of two stations joined by a linear drive cable and can be passed around and through walls, bulkheads, floors, and other obstacles to reach the host valve. The system can operate valves as far away as 200 ft., accommodating 540 degrees of bends in the cable run. The Flexi-Drive is completely sealed and permanently lubricated, requiring no maintenance; has a service life of 20 000 valve cycles; and is designed to withstand severe temperature and underwater conditions. It replaces outdated reach rod and chain systems, and was designed to increase the safety and functionality of nuclear applications by reducing exposure of operating personnel to hazardous materials.
