License renewal clears coastal zone hurdle

The oldest operating power reactor in the United States has only 14 months left on its license, but two developments in late December made it much more likely that Oyster Creek will be allowed to continue operating until 2029. On December 28, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) agreed to find that license renewal for the 650-MWe boiling water reactor near Forked River, N.J., is consistent with the federal Coastal Zone Management Act (CZMA) in exchange for an agreement by the licensee, AmerGen Energy Company, to carry out wildlife habitat restoration and other improvement projects in the plant vicinity.
