Sergei Kiriyenko, director general of the Rosatom State Nuclear Energy Corporation, took the opportunity at the IAEA General Conference to highlight Russia's recent nuclear achievements and its efforts to enhance security and nonproliferation. Nuclear energy, he said, has been identified as one of Russia's key industries to drive the modernization and technological development of the country's economy, and as such is supervised by a special presidential committee. While the optimization of VVER pressurized water reactor technology remainsrnthe first priority for Rosatom, the second priority is the formation of the infrastructure needed to develop a fast-breeder reactor program and a closed fuel cycle. Russia is currently completing the construction of BN-800, an 800-MWe FBR, and is developing the necessary mixed-oxide fuel fabrication capability.
