Another side event that was held along with the IAEA General Conference was an exhibition of U.S. nuclear-related companies and organizations and the Technologies and Services Seminar, organized by the U.S. Department of Commerce. The seminar gave conference delegates an opportunity to learn more about the U.S. nuclear industry.rnMary Saunders, deputy assistant secretary for manufacturing and services at the Commerce Department, set out to dispel concerns about the U.S. nuclear power industry's having fallen behind technologically, since it has not had a new plant order for about 30 years. She assured those in attendance that over the years, the industry has become more innovative and efficient, thereby improving the performance of operating plants, upgrading and uprating plants, undertaking licensing activities, and becoming involved in plant construction in other countries.
