Agreeing with the president

I agree wholeheartedly with ANS President Thomas Sanders"s vision of "right-sized" reactors (AW, July 2009, p. 85). Utility executives seem to have been fascinated with the bigger turbines and hence the large MWt output of the bigger reactors, but there is just no beating those early two-loopers like Kewaunee, Prairie Island, and Point Beach. During my career in nuclear power, I have operated a very small, 78-MWt two-loop naval reactor prototype and the large, four-loop pressurized water reactor at Wolf Creek.
