Particle acceleration will resume in September, following modifications developed after last year's thwarted startup. The management of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (known by the French-based acronym CERN) announced on February 9 that it intends to resume beam production in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in late September, with experiments derived from the collision of accelerated beams beginning in late October. The LHC, the most powerful particle accelerator ever built, has been idled since last September, when a helium leak occurred during the first full-scale beam production attempt, forcing a shutdown for repairs.
