The united arab emirates and japan have signed a memorandum of cooperation concerning the development of nuclear power in the UAE. The scope of the agreement, signed on January 19, covers the preparation and planning for a nuclear power program; nuclear security and physical protection; nuclear safety, radiation protection, and emergency response; infrastructure and human resources development; and public awareness and education. The UAE's decision to introduce nuclear power followed a study that projected massive increases in demand for electricity in the coming decades, and plans are for the first reactor to be operational by 2017. In October 2008, the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation appointed CH2M Hill as the managing agent for its planned nuclear power program. The UAE had previously signed cooperation and bilateral agreements with several other countries, including France, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
