Three minor violations in API000 testing were identified in a July 16 inspection report by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Westinghouse Electric Company had contracted Purdue University to perform tests related to Westinghouse's effort to confirm the acceptability of earlier modifications to the design of the shield building of the pressurized water reactor. Based on the results of an inspection conducted May 25-28, the NRC has asserted that Westinghouse failed to verify, through its commercial-grade dedication process, critical characteristics of the steel plate used for in-plane shear testing. The violations were classed as Severity Level IV, the least severe category. Westinghouse is required to respond to the notice of violation. A company spokesperson stated that Westinghouse does not expect the findings to reflect adversely on the testing, or on judgment of it by the NRC in AP1000 design certification reviews.
