One million acres withdrawn from U mining

U.S. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar on June 20 announced his decision to make an emergency six-month withdrawal of about 1 million acres of federal lands near Grand Canyon National Park in northern Arizona from hard-rock mining claims under the Mining Law of 1872. Salazar said that the Interior Department would continue to evaluate whether to withdraw these lands from new mining claims for 20 years. Existing claims are not affected by Salazar's decision.
