Application submitted for used fuel repository site

SKB, Sweden's waste management agency, on March 17 submitted an application to build a final repository for used nuclear fuel at Forsmark, in Osthammar Municipality. The application will be reviewed by the Swedish Radiation Safety Authority and the Land and Environment Court. "The authority and the court will now conduct a comprehensive and thorough examination and investigation of the proposal submitted by the industry via SKB," said Andreas Carlgren, Sweden's minister for the environment. "The division of responsibilities is clear. The industry has full financial liability and must propose a location and method for final disposal. The authority and the court [will] examine whether the method and location proposed are safe."
