Italy's Council of Ministers has approved a one-year moratorium on the country's nuclear power development program. According to a statement released by the council on March 23, the moratorium is intended to prevent any hasty decisions being made in response to the Fukushima Daiichi accident in Japan, which has already led the European Union to agree on a program of stress tests at operating nuclear reactors. The moratorium extends only to activities related to the construction of new nuclear plants, such as site selection. It excludes those related to safety and waste management, including the establishment of a new nuclear safety agency and the development of a national waste repository.
