New concrete separation delays reactor restart

Progress Energy announced on April 4 that Crystal River-3 will remain off line while the company conducts an engineering analysis and review of a new concrete separation, or delamination, in the reactor containment. Evidence of the separation was noticed in mid-March during the reten-sioning of the containment tendons following the completion of repair work on an earlier separation that has kept the reactor out of service since September 2009. The 860-MWe pressurized water reactor near Red Level, Fla., was in an outage for refueling and steam generator replacement when workers discovered that a section of concrete far inside the containment structure had separated from the reinforcing steel.
