Updates on South Texas-1 and -2, Hope Creek/Salem

An Atomic Safety and Licensing Board was named on March 23 to consider a petition to intervene in the license renewal proceedings for STP Nuclear Operating Company's (STPNOC) two power reactors at the South Texas Project site near Palacios, Texas. If the ASLB decides that the petition contains admissible contentions, a hearing will be scheduled. The current licenses for South Texas-1 and -2, 1250.6-MWe Westinghouse pressurized water reactors, expire in August 2027 and December 2028, respectively. STPNOC applied for renewal last October. The petition to intervene was submitted by a citizen organization, the Sustainable Energy and Economic Development (SEED) Coalition, and a private citizen, Susan Dancer. Ronald M. Spritzer chairs the ASLB, with Nicholas G. Trikouros and Larry R. Foulke also as judges.
