High-energy LHC collisions delayed until 2014

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) announced on January 31 that the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the particle accelerator spanning the France/Switzerland border, will continue experiments in the range of 3.5 trillion electron volts (TeV) per beam in 2011 and 2012. Modifications intended to allow the LHC to operate at up to 7 TeV per beam—its originally designed capability—have been rescheduled for 2013, with operation to resume the following year. CERN had previously expected to undertake the modifications after experiments planned for this year were completed.
