The 75-foot-tall rusty-orange dome of the Heavy Water Components Test Reactor— known at the site as "Hector"—was removed on February 1 as part of a $25-mil-lion reactor decommissioning and deactiva-tion project at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in Aiken, S.C. Preparations for the removal of the dome and the decommissioning of the reactor began in October 2009. Since then, DOE contractor Savannah River Nuclear Solutions has had a crew of about 35 employees—including riggers, mechanics, engineers, designers, and crane operators—working on the project.
