Antinuclear group gains illegal entry to Bugey, Civaux nuclear plant sites

On May 2, members of Greenpeace illegally entered two French nuclear sites in order to draw attention to perceived power plant security risks. In the first incident, a man landed a motorized paraglider inside the Bugey nuclear compound near Lyon after dropping a smoke bomb on the roof of a reactor containment structure, demonstrating, according to the environmental group, the site's susceptibility to aerial attack. He was quickly arrested, as was another man who had been assisting him from outside the compound. In a separate incident, a man broke into the Civaux site in western France through a truck entrance. He was found an hour later hiding in a bush and was taken into custody. According to authorities, he failed to gain access to any of the site's facilities.
