NRC publishes responses to three petitions

In the April 30 Federal Register, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission published for public comment a notice of receipt of a petition from the citizen organization Nuclear Information and Resource Service, with 37 co-petitioners, requesting that the NRC amend its regulations in 10 CFR Parts 50 and 52 to expand the emergency planning zones (EPZ) around nuclear power plants. In essence, the petition requests that the plume exposure pathway EPZ be expanded from a 10-mile radius to a 25-mile radius; that a new emergency response zone with a 50-mile radius be established; and that the ingestion pathway EPZ be expanded from a 50-mile radius to a 100-mile radius.
