NRC issues confirmatory action letter on restart plans

The extent of tube wear in the recently installed steam generators at San Onofre-2 and -3 has prompted the Nuclear Regulato-rnry Commission to issue a confirmatory action letter to Southern California Edison Company (SCE), giving regulatory force to commitments made by the company to learn the cause of the unusual wear and to address the condition before either reactor resumes power operation. Unit 3 was shut down on January 31 because of a release of radioactive steam caused by a leak in a steam generator tube (AW, Mar. 2012, p. 28). Since then, tests conducted by SCE have found leaks in eight Unit 3 tubes (AW, Apr. 2012, p. 83).
