B&W Will Apply For Doe Funding For The mPOWER Smr. ThernBabcock & Wilcox Company stated on February I that it will apply to the Department of Energy to share costs for the development of the company's mPower small modular reactor. The DOE issued a draft funding opportunity announcement on January 19, aimed at federal cost sharing in the development of two SMR models (NN, Feb. 2012, p. 51). Westinghouse has already stated its intent to apply; its model (called simply the Westinghouse SMR) is, like mPower, an integral pressurized water reactor, sized at what Westinghouse calls "200 MWe class." B&W now refers to mPower's rating as 180 MWe.
