ATMEAI design chosen for second nuclear power plant

During an official visit to Ankara in early May, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe signed an agreement with Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that grants Japan exclusive negotiating rights to conclude a contract for the construction of Turkey's second nuclear power station, to be located in the northernmost province of Sinop, on the Black Sea. The two prime ministers announced the agreement at a press conference that followed the signing on May 3. Turkey chose the ATMEAI reactor technology for the project, which will be undertaken by a Japanese-French consortium led by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) and GDF Suez. The consortium, which also includes the Japanese power company Itochu, is expected to be joined by the Turkish electricity generation company EUEAS. The project will include four nuclear units and is valued at $22 billion. ATMEAI is an 1100-MWe class Generation Ⅲ+ pressurized water reactor developed by ATMEA, a joint venture of MHI and France's Areva. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2017, with the first unit to be completed in time for the country's centennial anniversary in 2023.
