Areva Inc. and Caterpillar Inc. announced on November 3 that they have signed a cooperative agreement to provide backup diesel generator sets and comprehensive engineering services to help U.S. utilities meet the requirements of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's FLEX program for beyond-design-basis event response. The companies will offer Caterpillar power modules, which range from 200 kW to 2.0 MW, to provide emergency backup electricity. The units can be installed in parallel to increase electricity output to meet the needs of individual plants.
