Local Consent For The Restart Of Japan's Sendai-I And -2 was given by the Satsumasendai city assembly on October 28. Although further approvals are needed, consent by the local assembly gives strong encouragement to the industry and government that the first restart of a nuclear plant since new safety regulations came into force in the wake of the Fukushima Daiichi accident is approaching. According to the Japan Atomic Industrial Forum, the vote in the assembly was overwhelmingly in favor of restart, and Mayor Hideo Iwakiri said that he agreed with the decision. The plant's owner and operator, Kyushu Electric Power Company, will now focus on convincing the governor of Kagoshima Prefecture, Yuichiro Ito, to approve operation. Once restart is approved, a final regulatory review, a plant inspection, and other operational safety checks must still be carried out.
