The withdrawal of land near the grand canyon from uranium mining was upheld in a September 30 ruling in the U.S. District Court for the District of Arizona. In January 2012, more than I million acres of land surrounding Grand Canyon National Park were withdrawn from hard-rock uranium mining, with the exception of several existing claims in the region. A lawsuit contesting the withdrawal was filed against the Department of the Interior by a number of organizations, including the Nuclear Energy Institute and the National Mining Association, and by mining company Quaterra Resources (NN, Apr. 2012, p. 80, and June 2012, p. 90). The plaintiffs questioned then Interior Secretary Ken Salazar's authority to withdraw the land.
