AREVA and ATOX, a Japanese provider of maintenance services for nuclear facilities, announced on May 5 that they have created a 50/50 joint venture, ANADEC, to provide solutions and services for the decommissioning and dismantling of Japanese nuclear power plants, including the Fuku-shima Daiichi site. The announcement was made during a visit to France by Japan's prime minister, Shinzo Abe. According to the companies, AREVA will supply decommissioning knowledge and technology, while ATOX will adapt the solutions proposed by AREVA to the specific needs of Japan. The joint venture will develop investigative and mapping techniques to gain a better understanding of the work environment at Fukushima and develop robotic solutions to speed the dismantling of difficult-to-reach areas.
