Early-stage plans for decommissioning oskarshamn-I are being developed by Swedish utility OKG, even though no decision to permanently stop operation of the reactor has been made. "The fact that we're already preparing applications and permits for a future decommissioning is due quite simply to the long lead times in these processes," OKG stated in a press release. Oskarshamn-I, a 473-Mwe boiling water reactor, is Sweden's oldest operating power reactor, having begun commercial operation in February 1972. The first step in the decommissioning process is an environmental impact assessment (EIA). OKG went through this process more than 10 years ago for the closure of the two-reactor Barseback plant. Preparing the EIA well in advance, said OKG's managing director, Johan Svenningsson, will shorten the overall time for completing it.
