A petition to apply risk-informed regs to new reactors has been docketed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Michael D. Tschiltz, director of risk assessment at the Nuclear Energy Institute, submitted the petition in January, seeking to have the alternative risk-informed treatment of power reactor structures, systems, and components in 10 CFR 50.69 available to holders of combined construction and operating licenses issued under 10 CFR Part 52. At present, 50.69 applies mainly to power reactors now in operation. The NRC stated in the March 27 Federal Register that the petition has been assigned Docket No. PRM-50-110 and that it is available on the ADAMS document system, with accession number ML 15037A481, but the petition was not yet open to public comment.
