Finding a site for spent fuel interim storage: Finally, some possibilities?

The history of nuclear waste management in the United States goes all the way back to the 1940s, according to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America's Nuclear Future in its January 2012 report to the secretary of energy. The production of plutoni-um for the development of nuclear weapons-related to World War Ⅱ-and the need for expeditiousness led to the storage of high-level liquid waste in underground steel tanks. These were not intended as a long-term solution, however, and options were investigated in the 1950s. A study by the National Academy of Sciences deemed geologic disposal the most promising method, and particularly disposal in salt deposits.
