When the fuel gauge in your motor vehicle approaches "E," you have to pull into an establishment that has pumps for gasoline or diesel. Unless you are wealthy, rural, and have your own fuel storage tanks. There aren't as many of these places as there once were. And the ones that survive are largely impersonal. You pull in, swipe your credit card in a slot, fill your own tank, and you're on your way, with no human contact. Some gas stations have a convenience store where you can buy things like candy bars, motor oil, chewing tobacco, and bait from a live clerk. Very few stations have service bays where they can repair your vehicle. Or some are all service bays with no fuel.
