Nuclear power: Coming full circle

In discussions of nuclear science and technology, and in particular of nuclear power, common topics that have arisen or questions that have been posed to me-especially by individuals who are not in any way involved in the nuclear field-have to do with used fuel management, cooling towers (no, the cooling tower at Michigan City, Ind., is not a nuclear plant, it's attached to a coal plant!), safety and security, and whether any new plants are being constructed in the United States. It is not often that the conversation has led to environ-mentalism, and I am assuming that this is because most people don't connect the words "nuclear power" with the words "environmentally friendly."
