Federal assessment highlights gaps in cyberattack readiness

A report from the Departments of Energy and Homeland Security released on May 30 identifies problems with the U.S. energy sector's ability to deal adequately with cyberattacks on the nation's electricity grid. Dated August 9, 2017, the report was mandated by Executive Order 13800, "Strengthening the Cybersecurity of Federal Networks and Critical Infrastructure,"issued by President Trump in May of last year (NN, July 2017, p. 30). Among its provisions, the order called for the DOE and DHS to analyze the potential scope and duration of a prolonged power outage from a significant cyber incident and to evaluate the country's readiness to manage and mitigate the consequences of such an event.
