For the second year in a row, the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists'Science and Security Board has moved the minute hand of its Doomsday Clock closer to "midnight"—the symbolic point of global catastrophe. On January 25, the board reset the clock from two-and-a-half minutes to midnight to two minutes, bringing the famous apocalypse calibrator closer to midnight than at any time since 1953, when the United States and the Soviet Union conducted hydrogen bomb tests within nine months of each other. The board moved the clock 30 seconds forward in January of last year as well (NN, Mar. 2017, p. 25).
