As we enter the new year and leave the old one behind, we-are pretty sure that no one would deny that the bankruptcy filing by Westinghouse and the avalanche of ramifications that has followed was the biggest nuclear- related news story of 2017. It most certainly has kept the Nuclear News staff busy, staying on top of the latest litigation, public service commission hearings and decisions, and potential legislation related to the situation, broadly and, more specifically, in South Carolina. At last count, 10 lawsuits had been filed, 14 pieces of legislation were awaiting the South Carolina legislature's attention, and a number of investigations were under way, including those by two South Carolina legislative committees, by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, and by the South Carolina U.S. Attorney's Office through a federal grand jury probe. And adding yet another element to the already complex situation, it was announced right after the first of the year and just prior to this issue's going to press that SCANA has tentatively agreed to a merger with Dominion Energy, headquartered in Richmond, Va. For a brief summary on this development, see Late News, page 18; details will appear in the February issue.
