If you've had a chance to take a close look at the annual reference section featured in our March issue (yes, nuclear nerds, reprints of that informative and, I think it's fair to say, one-of-a-kind section are now available-turn to page 52 of this issue for ordering information), you no doubt noticed the list of U.S. power reactor projects, showing, with painful clarity, the unhappy state of nuclear power plant construction in the United States. Out of the 10 new-build projects listed, only one, Vogtle, is currently moving forward (see pages 17 and 20 for more good news on that). Of the other nine, three are labeled "terminated" and six are "indefinite." ("Improbable" might be the more realistic word.) Further, no less an authority than William Von Hoene Jr., Exelon's senior executive vice president and chief strategy officer, suggested last April, to little if any pushback as far as I'm aware, that there is no future for large nuclear plant construction in the United States (NN, May 2018, p. 17).
