NUCLEAR WILL HELP NEW JERSEY ACHIEVE ITS GOAL of 100 percent clean energy by 2050, according to the 108-page Draft 2019 Energy Master Plan: Policy Vision to 2050, released on June 10 by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities. The plan defines clean energy as carbon-neutral electricity generation and maximum electrification of the transportation and building sectors. "New Jersey is aggressively pursuing a carbon neutral power sector ... by ambitiously installing offshore wind and solar energy, supporting nuclear energy, and developing a least-cost market solution to ensure a carbon-neutral solution for the remaining electricity consumed by New Jersey load," the report states. As of 2018, the state's electricity mix included 42.5 percent nuclear and 51.6 percent natural gas, with renewable energy generation approaching 5 percent. "Since the closing of the Oyster Creek nuclear power plant in September 2018," the report states, "New Jersey's share of electricity from nuclear power has fallen to about 32 percent from its three remaining plants, and natural gas has largely made up the difference."
