Welcome to the post-Betsy Tompkins era at Nuclear News. As Betsy noted in her January editorial, she is closing out her 40-plus-year career with NN this month and has seen fit to hand over the editorial reins of the magazine to yours truly. I greatly appreciate the opportunity, and while it will no doubt be a challenge to fill Betsy's shoes-metaphorically speaking, of course!-I'm confident that the high quality of the magazine can and will be maintained. Key to that assertion is the knowledge that I'm backed up by a first-rate editorial staff, including Senior Editor Phyllis Ruzicka, Associate Editors Susan Gallier and Tim Gregoire, International Editor Dick Kovan, and Production/Design Editor Chris Salvato. In case you're interested, I've been an associate editor with NN for seven years now, having joined the staff in February 2012. My previous positions include managing editor of a performing arts magazine and publications manager for a cleaning industry association. So I came to ANS knowing a lot about theater, concerts, and vacuum cleaners. But before you panic, let me assure you that the last seven years at NN have provided quite the educational experience. I've interviewed a wide variety of nuclear industry professionals, attended and reported on ANS meetings, and written more news stories than I can count, on such topics as Nuclear Regulatory Commission oversight and enforcement, National Nuclear Security Administration activities, the ups and downs of the Vogtle and Summer projects, and the ongoing efforts to provide financial help to the nation's economically imperiled nuclear plants. And if that's not enough to inspire your confidence, you should know that Betsy lives only five minutes from the office, and I have her cell phone number.
