Armenia to Extend Operation of Nuclear Power Plant Until 2026

Armenia plans to extend the operatinglicense for its sole nuclear powerplant-Unit 2 (375 MWe PWR) at theplant in Metsamor-until 2026, and isstill considering plans for a new plantto replace the existing facility that hasbeen in service for 40 years.Armenia’s State Nuclear SafetyRegulatory Committee will extend thelicense for Unit 2 after the successfulimplementation of all activitiesplanned for this year, Plant CEO EduardMartirosyan said, according to mediareports. (Unit 1 was shut down in1989.) Russia's Rosatom Service JSC,which is contracted by the Armeniangovernment to upgrade the plant,said this year's maintenance outagefor the plant will be extended to 141days to complete the remaining workfor modernization, which includesannealing of the reactor vessel.
