U.A.E. LAW BACKS '123 AGREEMENT' NONPROLIFERATION PROMISES

With a civil nuclear cooperation agreement between the United States and the United Arab Emirates expected to go into effect any day, the United Arab Emirates passed its first-ever federal nuclear power law earlier this month. The finalization of the law marks the next step in the country's aggressive move to deploy nuclear power, which is expected to result in the construction and operation of a reactor by 2017. In addition to establishing a federal nuclear energy regulatory authority and outlining a regulatory regime, the law also codifies the U.A.E.'s promise to forego domestic uranium enrichment and reprocessing in favor of utilizing fuel supplies from existing nuclear fuel supplier nations.
