GRIJALVA REINTRODUCES LEGISLATION TO PROTECT GRAND CANYON LANDS

Rep. Raul Grijalva (D-Ariz.) reintroduced legislation Jan. 22 to protect more than one million acres of land near the Grand Canyon from uranium mining, renewing a push to safeguard land around the landmark and tourist site. ThernHouse Natural Resources Committee voted to approve an identical resolution last year that directed the Secretary of the Interior to withdraw the land, notwithstanding current claims, for a period of up to three years. The Bureau of Land Management never followed through with the withdrawal and the Bush Administration in October attempted to invalidate the authority of the committee to invoke a clause in the Federal Land Policy and Management Act of 1976 that gave it power for emergency land withdrawals (NNB Monitor, Vol. 27 No. 44).
