NRC STAFF TO CONSULT COMMISSION ON RISK INFORMING NEW REACTORS

Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission will make the final decision on how guidance governing new nuclear power plants will take into account the reduced risks involved with the new, safer reactor designs, NRC staff told industry representatives last week. For the past year, NRC staffers and nuclear plant designers and operators have been wrestling with how to structure guidance that assures that the increased levels of safety provided by new reactors are maintained despite periodic changes that occur throughout a reactor's life. Originally, the staff anticipated simply amending the guidance documents for nuclear reactors, but representatives from the Office of New Reactors said last week that they are preparing a paper that will lay out three alternatives for commissioners to decide between on the issue. NRO expects to deliver the paper to the Commission in August or September, staff member Charles Ader said at a June 3 meeting.
