SEVERAL SAFETY ISSUES REMAIN FOR GAS REACTORS, AGENCY SAYS

The Nuclear Energy Agency-a division of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development-has compiled a list of the safety issues that still need to be tested before deployment of gas-cooled, high-temperature nuclear reactors and categorized the facilities that could host such tests. The analysis, released late last month, was conducted by the Task Group on Advanced Reactor Experimental Facilities (TAREF), appointed by NEA's Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations. The group originally aimed to perform the same task for sodium-cooled fast reactors within the same time frame, but given the more readily available information on gas-cooled reactors, that report was produced first and the sodium reactor report is expected to be complete by the end of 2010.
