Japan pushes the Simplified LWR designs to 1200 MWe

In 1988, the Japan Atomic Power Company (JAPC) and Japanese utilities started two series of studies to examine the possibility of modifying two of the main Simplified Light Water Reactor (SLWR) designs, the AP600 (a passive PWR design) and the SBWR, to accommodate Japanese requirements. The overall conclusions of the latest studies are that at 1200 MWe unit size both types of simplified designs, referred to here as the SPWR and the JSBWR, can meet the needs of Japanese utilities and compare favourably to conventional nuclear plants.
