摘要

The development of sustain-able and safe nuclear energy requires R&D on the behaviour of fuel and material under irradiation. Materials testing reactors (MTRs) have long played a key role in achieving this. These facilities help to address the challenges faced by the industry, research and public bodies in areas such as plant life extension, fuel evolution, waste minimisation and infrastructure. Taking into account lifetime extensions and the progressive launch of Generation III, nuclear power plants using water coolants will be in operation through the entire century. They will require a continuous R&D support following a long-term trend driven by the plant life management, safety demonstration, flexibility and economic improvement.
