The stakes are rising in the three-way competition between USEC, Urenco and Areva over construction of new factories to enrich uranium. In May, the U.S. Department of Energy offered a conditional commitment for a $2 billion loan guarantee to Areva for its $3.3 billion, 3.3 million SWU gas centrifuge enrichment facility planned for Idaho Falls, Idaho. USEC responded by announcing that Toshiba Corporation and Babcock & Wilcox Investment Company have announced plans to invest $200 million in its 3.8 million SWU American Centrifuge Plant in Piketon, Ohio.
