Russia and Iran have signed a cooperation agreement that could lead to the construction of an additional eight nuclear reactors in Iran. The cornerstone of the agreement is the further expansion of the Bushehr nuclear plant on the Persian Gulf, which Rosatom completed in 2013. A contract has been signed between Russian design company NIAEP-ASE and the Nuclear Power Production and Development Company of Iran for the construction of two additional WER units at Bushehr in the 'short term'. The exact type of reactors, as well as the financial terms and timetable will be agreed over the coming months, Rosatom said, 11 November. In the medium term, two further reactors will be built at Bushehr, and new seawater desalination plant that would be powered by the station is under consideration. The parties have also agreed to develop an additional four WER reactors on another (as yet unnamed) site in Iran. The entire project, including equipment and nuclear fuel supplies, will be carried out under the auspices of the International Atomic Energy Agency and will fully meet the nuclear non-proliferation regime, Rosatom said.
