The Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, launched on April 1st, 2005, has strategic responsibility for the decommissioning and clean-up of all twenty UK public-sector civil nuclear sites. The NDA was set up by the Government under the Energy Act 2004. Sir Anthony Cleaver, NDA Chairman, said: "Many of the UK sites - whether built for research or power generation -have reached, or will shortly reach, the end of their active lives. The nature of the decommissioning process means these facilities cannot simply be switched off and demolished, but will take many decades to decommission."
