The announcement many of us had been awaiting for most of this century finally came on Thursday, January 10th, 2008. John Hutton addressed the Commons as Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) and stunned nobody at all in announcing Government's decision that energy companies would be allowed to build new nuclear stations in the UK. The fact that the announcement confirmed a long series of suggestions and leaks meant it was more relief than jubilation for the nuclear industry, but the nagging doubt as the Secretary of State sat down had many of us asking "So what now?"
