Going overseas

Established in 2004, DBD Limited is an independently-owned UK Small Medium Enterprise (SME). This year DBD successfully transferred UK nuclear intellectual property (IP) to an international client for the first time as part of a concept design study and in doing so have secured an exciting, longer term role with the client. This article provides an account of DBD's recent experience of IP transfer internationally, from an SME perspective. Since the experiences highlighted are those of a recently graduated Engineer at DBD, this article also gives an insight from a younger engineer's perspective. The international transfer of UK IP is not a new concept. However as an SME we found that transferring IP for the first time meant the need to overcome many unfamiliar obstacles throughout the entire lifecycle of the project.
