Co-generation in the Early Days of Nuclear Power in the United Kingdom Part 1: Calder Hall and Chapelcross

1. The first-generation Magnox plants at Calder Hall and Chapelcross did more than generate electricity. 2. These plants were true multi-role facilities which in addition to supporting the UK's nuclear deterrent they produced radioisotopes for medical and industrial uses in addition to steam for reprocessing activities and providing space heating for buildings. 3. These historic examples of co-generation may show the way forward for the next generation of nuclear power stations.
